Buy or rent a flute from a music
store . When first starting to play an
instrument, you should consider
renting to be certain that you enjoy
it enough to purchase. If you're
sure you are going to enjoy it, rent-
to-own or buying are good options.
If you are taking lessons, it would
be a good choice to consult your
teacher about the right type and the
positioning of the flute for you.
Flutes can cost from 100 to 1000+
dollars, but good quality student
flutes sell at around the 300 mark.
Beginners should get a closed-hole
student flute, of a good, reputable
brand, as many cheap flutes are
poorly made, and hard to play as a
result. Expensive, professional
flutes, mostly open-holed, are for
more experienced flute players and
are also often hard to play, but for
different reasons. Before you buy,
get some advice from other players
and/or teachers to help select the
right instrument for you.
